The Silver Quill management has asked me to post on here to remind everyone that Silver Quill, Blair's literary arts magazine, is now accepting submissions in the Media Center, the English office, and Room 137, as well as by email at mbhssilverquill [at] gmail.com. In fact they prefer email, and also they say you can email them at silverquillexec [at] mbhs.edu with any questions.

Silver Quill is a really cool magazine, for those of you who have been living under rocks, and it wins lots of awards and is also just all-around cool and has really good art and writing. It's $6 alone or free with a yearbook, and definitely worth the money. So submit cool stuff!

ok, so thanks to a lil' lady named mollie, there's now a animal rights club. It's mainly a club for vegans/vegetarians/people who just animately believe in animal rights. There are no requirements to be a part of the club, so all are welcome. Meetings are on Friday in room 219 at 2:15 pm, mollie and i hope to see you there! :)

Any thoughts on this? [23 Jan 2004|11:17pm]

Alright, well i should introduce myself. Im Ryan the piercer. I've pierced i'd say around 200-300 people at blair. So some of you may already know who i am. So basically i was just wondering if anyone here actually knew who i was, AND if anyone else was interested in any piercings. Yes, i do it professionaly with the same equipment you'd find in any studio. Yes, i know what im doing, ive been piercing for almost 3 years now and ive had over 1000 satisfied customers. Anyone interested can comment in my journal or here or just IM me.

about that feature... [09 Jan 2004|09:57pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

The parents in that story sound ... sort of extreme.

And now, an interpretive non-patronizing ramble:

Are these parents/kids primarily of magnet and/or CAP affiliation?

That comment(s) (below the story) about college being easy was misleading as well; it really depends on your major.

To conclude - if you want to get far in life, you have to be self-motivated/self-driven/self-disciplined because only then will your accomplishments truly be your own.

An urgent plea [05 Jan 2004|10:01pm]

I repeat, this is urgent.

First, read this article that appeared just recently in my school's newspaper.

Alright, now that you have done that...

Although my name is indeed Lauren, and I am a senior at Montgomery Blair High School and a good friend of Julia Bertaut's, and I was interviewed at the same time as she, I did not make those comments. Rather, they were made by another good friend, who was also interviewed at the same time and who I shall not name for the sake of preserving her anonymity. Both Julia and my transcript, which does not show a single B in the entirety of my secondary educational career, can verify that I am telling the truth.

To deny those comments, though, is not the point of my plea. Rather, I would like to urge Silver Chips to revise the method it uses to maintain the anonymity of the sources. Changing a person's name to protect his or her identity is perfectly fine, but simply swapping it with the name of the person who was sitting next to them is not; this only has the potential to hurt the reputation of others. More effort needs to be put into choosing names appropriately to accomplish the all-important goal of freedom of speech and of the press.

Please support me in this endeavor by either making a comment in the comment box below the article, or by spreading the word. Although it appears I have taken no action myself, I can tell you that I am currently in the process of drafting my own comment with my parents, as well as a letter to the editorial staff.

Again, I beg you, please help me. I cannot do this alone.

Youngins, every friday during 5A and 5B, there is something kind of like a debate thing called Education Symposium, which takes place in room 250 during 5A and 251 during 5B. You should stop by if it seems like your kind of thing.

Also, what's up with the ID fiasco? And interims... when are they sent out?

Though I bet you knew that already. The Blair website doesn't say anything, though, so I thought I'd warn you and save you from my fate of actually going outside.

Quick question - how would one go about SFTP-ing a .pdf file to the Blair servers? It's kind of important. If anyone can tell me how, that would be great! Thanks!

Oh, and please spread the news to any friends who may be interested :D

Does anyone want a guinea pig? She's cute and free, comes with a brand new thing of food and half a bag of bedding. Her name is Go Kart and she's maybe 2 years old. I have to get rid of her because my landlord threw a hissy fit. If you're interested, email me at ilikealphabetsoup@yahoo.com. She has to be out by the end of the weekend.
